The Pegasus
A Piece of Art History at Our Cellar Door
Standing proudly at the entrance to Stephens Family Estate is a truly one-of-a-kind piece of Australian art history — a David Bromley fibreglass Pegasus.
When we acquired the sculpture, it had already lived several lives. Over the years, the Pegasus had been painted multiple times, with its most recent design featuring a striking red finish and the words “Long Long Ago” painted across its side.
We were fortunate enough to obtain a Certificate of Authenticity from the Bromley team, confirming its provenance, and were given permission to restore the sculpture to its original classic black finish.
For us, this wasn't simply a repaint. It was about bringing a special piece of art back to its original character while giving it a new home and a new chapter here at Stephens Family Estate.
The Restoration
The transformation was a labour of love.
Donna spent weeks carefully stripping back the layers of previous paint and preparing the fibreglass surface, revealing the beautiful form of the Pegasus underneath. It was a painstaking process that required patience, care and plenty of hard work.
Once the preparation was complete, Gina's brother, Spiro Fililava from Mahoney & Fililava Painting, worked his magic, spray painting the sculpture back to its beautiful classic black finish.
Watching the Pegasus transform was something truly special. Layer by layer, the history of the sculpture was uncovered, until the sleek black form we see today emerged.
Why a Pegasus?
In Greek mythology, Pegasus is the legendary winged horse, traditionally described as the offspring of Poseidon and Medusa. He became a symbol of inspiration, imagination and freedom, and is one of the most recognisable creatures in Greek mythology.
The Pegasus has long been associated with the idea of soaring beyond the ordinary — a fitting symbol for a place built around creativity, family, wine and creating memorable experiences.
A New Chapter
Today, our Pegasus sits proudly at the front of Stephens Family Estate in Red Cliffs, near Mildura, welcoming everyone who visits our cellar door.
It has quickly become part of the character of our winery and has certainly caught the eye of both our local community and visitors to the Sunraysia region. We've loved watching people stop to admire it, photograph it and wonder about its story.
What was once a sculpture with many layers of colour and history has now been given a new chapter — standing proudly in its classic black, right at the entrance to our family winery.
For us, it represents more than just a beautiful sculpture.
It represents art, history, transformation and new beginnings.
And we couldn't think of a better place for it than here at Stephens Family Estate.
